Recently over half of the planet lost their BlackBerry connectivity because of a hardware failure somewhere in RIM�s inner workings. This connectivity loss lasted for days and this meant days where BlackBerry users found their smartphones all but useless.

RIM has finally managed to stabilize its infrastructure and with it has come the fallout and the counting of the cost of this catastrophe. This cost could be considerable according to trade in company Gazelle who claim to have received a record number of BlackBerry handsets.

RIM did try to sweeten the blow to its customers by offering them $100 worth of free premium apps. The problem really couldn�t have come at a worse time as it just so happened that the Apple iPhone 4S launch was in full swing. The media was all over this launch and BlackBerry owners instantly tuned into the potential of the iPhone as RIM�s network fell apart. In the space of a few days RIM was seeing a massive loss. Gazelle stated that they have no doubts that this is the reason for the influx of BlackBerry trade ins. This is the highest volume of BlackBerry trade ins they have ever seen.

Whether or not RIM can recover from such a massive outage remains to be seen but with customers leaving the platform in droves how long will it take before all they have left is their select business customers.

A patent system can be a very long drawn out system and today we want to report that Apple can finally call the iconic Slide to Unlock gesture its own after the United States Patent & Trademark Office granted Apple its patent.

In his biography, Steve Jobs is said to have wanted to destroy Android claiming that it was a stolen product based on various Apple technologies. Steve Jobs was also very animated about Slide to Unlock and for all the right reasons too because when the iPhone first launched in January 2007, he staid to unlock the phone all he had to do was take his finger and slide it across. He claimed that they wanted something that you couldn�t do by accident in your pocket.

Although Slide to Unlock is very simple its ingenuity cannot be denied. While many aspects of Apple�s iOS have been flawed and subject to change it is very hard to think of an easier unlock strategy. It seems that no matter how advanced the iOS is to become it is highly unlikely that the Slide to Unlock will cease to remain a fundamental part of it.

In total, Steve Jobs took an amazing 313 patents with him and these range from the click-wheel of the iPod to the key design aspects of the iPhone 4. iOS 5 was released just over two weeks ago and it brought with it a number of great changes. With over 25 million users already enjoying the delights that iOS 5 has to bring we decided to take a look at exactly what users can expect to gain over their previous version iOS 4.

With iOS 5 users get the newly designed Notification Center and improved camera along with iCloud and some less publicized changes that have taken place. One of the changes we want to tell you about is the increase in web browsing speed. Pages now load more than twice as fast using iOS 5 than when running iOS 4.

These statistics actually come courtesy of New Relic who actually performed side by side tests on 3,000 web app using Safari 5.1 on iOS 5 and Safari 5.0 on iOS 4. New Relic haven�t however stated what device they used but we are guessing that it was an iPhone 4 or iPod judging by the infographics they released.

This information showed that on average, pages load in 9.6 seconds using iOS 4 and just 4.1 seconds when running iOS 5. Apple have always spent a lot of time with the rendering engine that is built into Mobile Safari and it is a good thing too. Even if you don�t upgrade your iPhone to the new iPhone 4S you will still see an increase in web performance if you update your software. iOS 5 is available as a free update for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.

iPad 3 On The Way?

According to reports to hit the internet it seems that the Apple iPad 3 could actually be going into production before the end of this year. This news comes from Jeffrey Fidacaro who is an analyst over at Susquehanna Financial Group.

According to his report, manufacturers have been ordered to start manufacturing one million iPads in the fourth quarter of this year. This news comes from a number of analysts who are trying to predict what the iPhone 4S means for the future of Apple as a company and where they stand fiscally for the company�s last two quarters including this one.

Fidacaro in his report references his colleague�s report on the iPad where other analysts are questioning the current increase in iPad production:

We believe AAPL pulled production forward to ensure sufficient availability of iPad during the holidays, and such a move is consistent with a production decline in advance of the new model launch (we believe iPad 3 starts production in 4Q, as noted below). Thus, we believe that recent competitor reports, which only noted the 4Q production volumes two weeks ago, were misinformed. iPad 3 appears on the forecast for 4Q production start. Our checks indicate that iPad 3 has now shown up on AAPL�s production forecast for a late-4Q production start. We believe 0.6 mln-1 mln units are forecasted for 4Q production.

This is great news if it is correct and hopefully the iPad 3 will pave the way for the new iPhone 5. BGR is also speculating that there will be an announcement for a new iPad mini which will be less expensive and will compete with the new Kindle Fire. We do hope that Apple will continue to provide some great devices and if their iPhone 4S sales are anything to go by there really is more to come.

The New iPhone 4S Sells More Than 4 Million In First Three Days

Apple have just released a formal statement about the sales of their brand new iPhone 4S which according to them has sold over four million units in its first three days since launching on the 14th of October.

This news comes directly from Apple in a press release statement that was released. It stated that a whopping 4 million units of the iPhone 4S were sold in the first weekend. According to Apple this is a record breaking number and no other phone has sold this much in such a short time. This is more than double what the iPhone 4 sold last year. As it turns out, demand for the iPhone 4S is way, way higher than what any informal poll could suggest or predict: the general public is going crazy for the iPhone 4S! Over a million units of the phone were pre-ordered in its first 24 hours alone with Apple calling it their most successful iPhone launch ever.

The iPhone 4S can be ordered right now, but since demand is so very high, don�t expect it to arrive at your doorstep before a week or two. Add Google Search To Your iOS 5 Notification Center

It seems like no matter what happens Google wants to be a part of it. Google has become a part of most people�s lives and let�s face it, most of us can�t do without it. Google search is the most commonly used item on the internet and with smartphones now connecting to the internet Google is always in demand.

Apple does give its users a couple of ways to use Google in its iOS software and on all iOS devices. This is done through the search bar in Mobile Safari and the Spotlight screen just to the left of the home screen. Both of these options work very well and they are easy to use but if you want something more there is always Google�s own iOS app.

If you want something more there is a brand new app called StatusGoogle and this also makes use of the Notification Center. This brand new app can�t be found in the App Store though and it can only be downloaded from Cydia which is the jailbreak app store. That�s right, StatusGoogle is a jailbreak tweak and when you download this it adds a new search bar to the notification center which is iOS 5�s new way of handling all your notifications.

Once you install StatusGoogle all you have to do is type in your search and hit return and you will automatically be in mobile safari with your Google search loading automatically. We do hope that Apple will begin to allow third party app store apps to take advantage of the notification center soon but until then if you want to take advantage of it you need to jailbreak your idevice.
